ABC Classic FM has featured my bass clarinet + percussion duo imagines me into systems smeared along wires in their series of Australian music podcasts. You can download it here. There is also a (pretty jetlagged) interview between myself and Julian Day.

The performance was recorded during ELISION’s concert in Melbourne in March, 2011. The other Australian works from that programme have also appeared in this podcast series, including Liza Lim’s Ehwaz (which concludes with some pretty sexy tam-tam-in-water action), Tim O’Dwyer’s finger-blistering Transbraxton I, and the massive Richard Barrett/ELISION/SIAL Codex collaboration-fest. Moscow Ensemble Academy

I’m really excited to have been accepted into the first International Moscow Ensemble Academy! I’ll be studying with Pierluigi Billone and Franck Bedrossian, and writing a new piece for the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Untersinn premiere

Last night Seth Josel performed Untersinn at St Paul’s Hall Huddersfield, not once but twice. This turn of events arose because the first performance was terrifyingly, face-peelingly loud, and he thought (not entirely accurately) that this might not have done the piece justice, so repeated it immediately at a lower volume setting. It was interesting to hear just how profoundly different the piece seemed at two different volumes (something we’d heard during rehearsals, as well).

Also on the programme was a beautiful new piece spanning six parts and three instruments by my colleague Ray Evanoff, a pretty spectacular piece by Josh Levine, works by two students at university in Gothenburg, Sweden, along with their teacher, Ming Tsao and the stunning (in every sense) 63–99 from Peter Ablinger’s 1-127.

Golden Fur featured on ABC Classic FM

This completely passed me by at the time, but New music up late, on ABC Classic FM, recently did a two-week feature on Melbourne-based trio Golden Fur. The shows comprise two concerts given in Melbourne, the first at Iwaki Auditorium in 2009, and the second in the Salon of the Melbourne Recital Centre in March 2010 (including …nailed, unstretched, to the floor…). imagines me into systems smeared along wires for clarinet and percussion, is being performed by ELISION (Richard Haynes and Peter Neville) in Melbourne on 26th March. This piece has been about four years in the making (as in: I decided to write it four years ago and then just didn’t get around to it, rather than I’ve actually spent four years composing it [he says, in a desperate attempt to lower expectations...]), so it’s great to finally have it see the light of day. Assuming I finish writing this one in time…

Domaine Forget

I’ve been lucky enough to be selected by Royaumont (which I attended in 2010) to be sent to Domaine Forget in Québéc! This is awesome news – I’m very excited to be working with the faculty of composers there (Denys Bouliane, John Rea, and guest Julian Anderson), as well as Lorraine Vaillancourt and the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. I’m also very excited to finally get to visit Canada – and on somebody else’s dime…

Untersinn, for electric guitar, is to be performed by Seth Josel in Huddersfield on 3rd March, after some workshops in the previous days. I’m really looking forward to this!

CeReNeM journal

I’m currently in the process of editing the next issue of the CeReNeM Journal. This issue focuses on elite musical training, and will feature articles reflecting on the role of summer courses, festivals and so forth in the development of early-career performers and composers. The issue also features papers from the composers who presented their work as part of the Huddersfield Autumn composers symposium.
