Subtitled [zeichenvorrats. begriffsinventur. halbtermini.], after the poetry of Ulf Stolterfoht (b. 1963, Stuttgart), schattenzeichen comprises an investigation of the conditions under which elements placed in time are experienced cognitively as syntaxes.
The piece takes as its starting point a limited palette of figural behaviours, all exhibiting characteristics of semantic featurelessness. These absences are formed in differing combinations and densities. They are distorted, decontextualised and ambiguated. Or perhaps/sometimes they distort, decontextualise and ambiguate.
‘Nouns’ are verbed, while ‘verbs’ are nouned. A vocabulary of lacunae, grammared through proximity, and a grammar voided through vocabulary. An ‘and’ and/or an ‘or’. A meaning-ing of meaninglessness and the gibberishing of explication:
